We are looking for a skilled and experienced member of our seaweed hatchery team who will oversee the day-to-day tasks of our hatchery activities. You will provide data to the research team as an active and engaged participant in research projects in various seaweed species. As a candidate you should hold a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree or similar. The position is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) Section of Coastal Ecology with work location at the Danish Shellfish Centre (Nykøbing Mors, Denmark). 

Responsibilities and qualifications
The work area of the position is to advance our understanding seaweed physiology and biology in relation to production and utilisation of seaweed. You will be part of a team and will report to the hatchery manager and project leaders. The work includes developing economic and ecological sustainable hatchery methods for various species in seaweed aquaculture with special emphasis on red seaweed species (mainly native red seaweed species Palmaria palmata, gracilaria and Porphyra sp. ) and developing methods for up-scaling viable seaweed cultures. We are looking for a person with good innovative skills as the area requires new solutions. Additionally, a high level of practical and technical skills is preferable. 

You are expected to improve our capacity for conducting relevant research within the field, and we expect that you will be a driver in our new hatchery facilities and participate in building a state-of-the-art team in the hatchery. You are furthermore expected to be actively engaged in processing data and following up on findings to help design and develop new research trials. 

Overall, we are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Experience in seaweed cultivation from a practical as well as a scientifical point of view. It is seen as an advantage if the candidate has experience with a wide range of seaweed species and particularly red seaweed species.
  • A strong innovative approach to the research field both in relation to developing the research but also in relation to the development of new technical solutions and new concepts.
  • Furthermore, the candidate should have experience, know-how, and visions for integration of scientific findings with utilisation of results on a practical level in seaweed aquaculture. 
  • Experience with practical methods and procedures are important.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a master´s degree (or equivalent) to apply for the position.

Salary and terms of employment 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years starting May 1st 2024.

Section for Coastal Ecology conducts research within the ecology of the coastal zone from nutrient dynamics to fish as well as the coastal zone as a fishing ground and production area for low-trophic aquaculture. Our core research areas are aquaculture of low-trophic species i.e. bivalves and seaweed, fisheries and effects of fishery and seaweed collection in the coastal zone, marine habitats, and their importance in the coastal zone for biodiversity and fish. The results of the research are largely translated into practice through advice to public management and the industry. We have a strong national and international collaboration network of universities, research institutions, and industry.
