At DTU’s National Institute of Aquatic Resources, we offer a 3-year PhD student position with focus on horse mussel (Modiolus modiolus ) production in our newly built low trophic species hatchery and nursery (learn more about the hatchery ) located at the Danish Shellfish Centre in Nykøbing Mors. In parallel to the European flat oyster restoration research and research development conducted in the hatchery, you will be employed in the Section for Coastal Ecology to develop the production of horse mussel seed in the framework of the BioReef project (BioReef ). During your scholarship, you will gain scientific expertise in marine biology, physiology, environmental interactions, water monitoring, ecosystem services, bivalve production cultivation and how to make management recommendations for horse mussel restoration.

Your PhD project will provide tools and protocols for horse mussel production for restoration purposes. Horse mussels are one of the charismatic key organisms in European waters able to live up to 100y providing ecosystem services. Horse mussel beds are OSPAR threatened and declining habitat classified. In your project, you will build on existing knowledge developed at DTU Aqua regarding shellfish production in hatchery and broodstock management in a team dedicated to shellfish production for restoration and aquaculture. You will acquire new scientific expertise to produce horse mussels on a large scale for restoration. You will study the environmental conditions requirements in hatchery for larvae production, compare substrates for horse mussel deployment in the field, follow horse mussel reef development and develop monitoring and biosecurity measures.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be responsible for conducting experimental research on horse mussel (Modiolus modiolus )  in hatchery setting from broodstock to spat, to secure horse mussel spat production for restoration. You will focus on developing methods for producing spats on different cultch and evaluate their suitability in the restored habitat(s).

Your responsibility and tasks will be to:

  • Plan and complete laboratory experiments and work following the reproduction cycle of horse mussel with respect to biosecurity measures.
  • Contribute to the daily routine and work tasks of the section, incl. feed and maintain the horse mussel, water quality data collection in the hatchery and in the field.
  • Complete various PhD school courses and external stays  to develop and expand your expertise.
  • Disseminate scientific results in peer-reviewed articles and assist in scientific advice to Danish ministries.
